RAPHAEL SAADIQ BACK ON THE SCENE September 18, 2008

While plenty of ink has been spilled lauding upstart ‘Queens of Retro-Soul’ from across the pond, Raphael Saadiq has lovingly synthesized a wholly live and sample-free sophomore solo album, The Way I See It.

The essence of various regional scenes that underpin our best music: Motown, Stax, Chi-town and Philly – all seamlessly spliced in surprising ways (an industrial vocal filter here, a Spanish vocalist there), The Way I See It is in every aspect state of the art.

In an album full of high points, the first single “Love That Girl” lays it down with a club-ready update of classic Temptations-era swing – right down to the impeccable strings and Saadiq’s clarion, falsetto vocals.

“Never Give You Up” slays with its multi-generational line-up: the track includes Raphael’s musical protégé C.J., as well as the legendary Stevie Wonder on harmonica.

And the quick-paced shuffle of “Big Easy” finds Saadiq longing for a child lost in Hurricane Katrina, replete with classic honky tonk flair and overlapping horn solos. The album’s inspiration was indeed global.

“I was cooling out and surfing in Costa Rica and The Bahamas,” recounts Saadiq, “and ran into people from all kinds of places. I noticed everybody was listening to classic soul music. When I came back home the music for this album flowed organically, naturally.”

8 THINGS THAT ARE MAKING YOU FAT September 18, 2008

Filed under: Health — Ryann Hayman @ 8:23 pm

You’re stuffed after a big restaurant dinner — but then the dessert cart rolls around, and you just have to order that gorgeous chocolate mousse. Or you’re munching from a big bag of chips while checking emails, and when you look up, the bag is empty. Sound familiar?

Environmental factors — like package size, portion size, the variety of food you’re served, and the size of your plate — can influence your eating more than you realize, experts say. Indeed, if we always ate only when we were really hungry and stopped when we were full, there would be no obesity epidemic.

The key, experts say, is to become more aware of these overeating triggers, which can help you resist the temptations and avoid weight gain. Once you become aware of the environmental cues that can sabotage your diet, you can react accordingly and make smart decisions.

Simple things such as bringing tempting snacks into your house, moving the candy jar at work out of sight, making fruits and vegetables more visible in your refrigerator, and eating more deliberately and slowly, can cut down on overeating and help you lose weight.

Here are eight things that can trigger overeating and weight gain:

1. Sights, Sounds, and Smells
Overeating can be triggered by the alluring smell of bacon cooking, the sound of popcorn popping, advertisements for junk food, and so on. You are influenced by your surroundings and our studies show these kinds of cues result in eating more food.

2. Distracted Eating
“Eating amnesia” is the act of unknowingly putting hand to mouth, usually from a big bag or bowl while sitting in front of the television, reading a book, checking emails, or during happy hour. Multi-tasking can lead to overeating because you’re not paying attention to what you are eating. When you eat more mindfully, you really taste the food — and are more likely to feel satisfied sooner.

3. Food, Food Everywhere
Everywhere you turn; there are opportunities to eat — at drive-through restaurants, vending machines, even gas stations. And when food is in front of us, we tend to eat more of it. Curb your instinct to overeat sweets and snacks by moving them out of sight — and putting more healthful foods into plain view. Resist the urge to splurge on unhealthy foods by carrying your own healthy snacks.

4. Food that’s Fast, Convenient, and Inexpensive: Fast-food restaurants on every corner offering inexpensive food also encourage us to eat more and more often. Combo meal deals sound like a bargain, but they are loaded with fat, sodium, and calories. To help yourself resist the temptation, work on developing a taste for the subtle, natural flavors of food. Dietitians recommend limiting visits to fast-food restaurants to once a week. And, they say, choose the healthier menu options — like salads and grilled chicken sandwiches — even if they cost a little more.

5. Portion Distortion
Our idea of a normal portion has become skewed, in part because so many restaurants serve oversized portions. Giant portions seem to have evolved into the norm, and many people have trouble understand how much they should eat. To understand what a portion should look lie, pull out the measuring cups and see how your portions stack up against the standards from the U.S. government’s mypyramid.com web site. Another answer to the portion dilemma is to eat more foods that are less calorically dense. These are foods that contain lots of water and fiber, but not many calories — like fruits, vegetables, and broth-based soups. Mindful eating can help here, too. Eat slowly, taste the food and become more in touch with what you are eating and how it tastes so you can enjoy it more and start to appreciate satisfaction with smaller portions.

6. Giant-Size Packages
You’ll find plenty of bargains on mega-sized packages at super-discount stores like Costco or Sam’s. But unfortunately, experts say, these giant containers can affect us on an unconscious level and cause us to eat more. Researchers have found that when you eat from a large container, you are likely to consume 25% to 50% more than you would from a smaller package — especially when you’re eating snacks and sweets.

7. Not-So-Dainty Dishware
Researchers have found that we tend to eat more when we’re served from larger containers. Wansink and colleagues found that when students were given food in larger bowls, they served themselves 53% more and consumed 56% more than those who used smaller bowls. When you use smaller bowls, plates, and cups, you won’t feel deprived because the food will look plentiful.  Daintier dishware and smaller utensils can also help slow your eating.

8. Too Much Variety
A buffet restaurant can be a dieter’s nightmare. Too many choices encourages having a taste (or more) of everything, and before you know it, your plate “runneth” over. Too much variety on your plate at one meal can often mean too much food overall. So use variety to help meet your nutritional needs, but concentrate on the right foods. Eating a variety of foods is great, as long as the foods are low in calories and rich in nutrients — like fruits, beans, vegetables, broth soups, whole grains, and low-fat dairy.

Naomi and Chanel

When Naomi Campbell isn’t berating airline staff and throwing cell phones at the help, the supermodel can actually be quite nice. She put on her annual Fashion for Relief charity fashion show, this time raising money for The White Ribbon Alliance fund to promote safe childbirth, last night at London’s Natural History Museum.

At 38, Naomi can still match up with any model – as she shows here on the runway with 18-year-old Chanel Iman, who was spending plenty of time with Ryan Leslie before fashion show season got underway. Not that the doyenne was the oldest catwalker by any means. Cilla Black, a 65-year-old English singer, strutted her stuff in the show that featured celebrity models.

Ice T has signed on as spokesman for Open Visions Networks, a new service aimed at giving viewers a cable TV-like experience in cyberspace, reports Allhiphop.com.

Open Visions Networks is the brainchild of three inner-city entrepreneurs: Sherman “Doc” Bell, Jay “Nasdaq” Swanston, and Leroy Gordon.  By recreating an authentic online television experience, the company looks to separate themselves form the video sharing sites.

“With us, we put the power back in the hands of the creators,” co-founder Jay Swanston explained. “We are not like Youtube or any of those streaming websites that calls each user account a channel. Myspace, Hulu, and Youtube are not based on niche content allowing the user to make money. All you do is upload on their site and make them and their advertisers money. We have music, independent and major studio movies, even Bollywood. Our main focus is to grow the libraries of content where subscribers get what they want. So if someone likes stand-up comedy 24-7, they could go to say, channel 80.”

Ice T says he was hooked from the moment he understood how the Web site would work.

“At the initial meeting I was blown away when these guys showed me what they were working on,” Ice told AllHipHop.com. “Me being an Internet cat myself, I’ve always tried to be on the edge of the tech sh*t. When I got the details I realized, ‘man this is no bullsh*t’”

Ice-T and wife Coco will have their own channels, focusing on original content specific to their interests.

“What I’ll do with Ice TV is put a lot of back catalog stuff that I’ve had over the years,” Ice explained. “There could possibly be legal problems, but I really don’t care. I really don’t see them coming after me. There’s still money coming in for the old stuff, but I’m not gonna ask anyone, I’m just gonna do it.”

OVN TV is currently free and available in 109 countries. New users can visit www.ovntv.com to subscribe and experience the service. The brand is set to offer Hi-Def channels by early 2009.

Billboard is reporting that John Legend is the latest artist to employ iTunes’ Complete My Album feature as a marketing tool in advance of his next album, “Evolver,” due Oct. 28.

The campaign began July 29 with the release of the album’s first track “Green Light.” Next was “If You’re Out There,” in August, and “on Sept. 16 the remix of “Green Light” was made available. Two more tracks will be sold through the initiative Sept. 30 and Oct. 14.

While other artists have used the Complete My Album feature – which lets fans who buy individual tracks from an album acquire the remaining songs without having to purchase them individually – as a marketing tool, most notably Lil’ Wayne, Legend is upping the ante by taking a more international approach and offering the pre-release songs in 20 territories worldwide.

As the New York Daily News puts it, “Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx got his blond fix in Las Vegas last weekend.”

According to the newspaper’s Rush & Malloy column, the actor started off Friday night at the preview of Noah Tepperberg’s Lavo Nightclub flirting with “Dancing With the Stars” alum Stacy Keibler.

“Jamie couldn’t stop rubbing her,” noted a spy. Keibler reportedly wandered off, leaving Foxx alone.

The next day, he hit the Tao Beach pool, where he reportedly attempted to woo “Jericho” actress Ashley Scott.

According to Rush & Malloy: “She, too, seemed resistant to his charms. So, that night it was back to Lavo, where we watched Foxx pull up to the bumper of another blond. His advance on her rear was briefly interrupted when he smelled a fellow patron’s cigarette.

“‘Yo, man,’ a member of Foxx’s entourage told the guy. ‘Jamie is allergic to smoke. Put that out.’ When the reveler ignored the comment, the sunglasses-wearing Foxx wrapped his scarf around his face. Looking like a sheik, he returned to grinding the blond. They disappeared into the night shortly afterward.”

Kanye West says he has re-recorded his new song “Love Lockdown” after people posting feedback on his Web site complained about the original version.

“Your prayers have been answered!! There’s a new version of ‘Love Lockdown’ coming,” he wrote. “We used new taiko drums, and I re-sung it. … It’s being mastered now.”

The artist used the recent MTV VMA awards to debut the song, which features him crooning in a heavily Auto-Toned singing voice. A number of fans on Ye’s blog felt the Auto-Tone was too much.

He responded: “If you don’t like Auto-Tune, too bad, ’cause I love it and have been using it since The College Dropout!!!”

West’s new album, “808s & Heartbreak,” is scheduled to be released on Dec. 16. The performer is also working on beats for Jay-Z’s upcoming album “Blueprint 3.”

On Oct. 2, West is due back in court to deal with his headline-making arrest at LAX airport on suspicion of vandalism. He and his road manager are accused of smashing camera equipment belonging to a paparazzi photographer.

MICHELLE OBAMA MAKES A ‘BEST DRESSED’ LIST September 18, 2008

Michelle Obama has been selected by People magazine as one of the year’s best dressed women, alongside such celebrities as Fergie, Rihanna and Gwyneth Paltrow.

“She has a look. She works it with confidence, and she knows what looks good on her,” said People’s Style Editor Clarissa Cruz, adding that the potential First Lady was singled out for a style that was “classic and confident.”

The potential First Lady said some of her favorite summer dresses are actually from stores at the mall – such as The Gap and H&M.

Also making the list are Kate Hudson, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, Eva Mendes, Sarah Jessica Parker and supermodel Heidi Klum.

Editors of People’s Best & Worst Dressed 2008 issue, due on newsstands Friday, explored the fashion choices of Republican vice presidential nominee Gov. Sarah Palin, who fancies rimless glasses, step-toe pumps and an updo hairstyle.

Palin didn’t talk to People, but her hairdresser told editors that the candidate would rather not discuss style choices “because she wants people to hear what she has to say.”
