GRATEFUL DEAD COMES ALIVE FOR OBAMA October 15, 2008

The surviving members of Grateful Dead performed together Monday night at Penn State University in support of Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama, reports the Associated Press.

Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart jammed together for the first time since their reunion tour in 2004. Three of the four – Weir, Lesh and Hart – performed in support of Obama in February in California.

Before Monday’s set for about 15,000 people, Hart said in a backstage interview with The AP that he was most impressed with Obama’s views on climate change.

“I believe him enough to be able to get up in front of my constituency, these people out there,” Hart said, pointing out the door to his dressing room, “and tell them ‘I believe.’ That’s really important. The Grateful Dead does not take this lightly. We’ve never really done something quite like this.”

Andrea Mead, Obama’s spokeswoman for Pennsylvania, said Monday night the main goal was to stir up voter outreach efforts in a critical battleground state. After Gregg Allman and Butch Trucks of the Allman Brothers Band opened the show, Obama supporters including Penn State assistant football coach Jay Paterno and cornerback Lydell Sargeant took to the stage to endorse him. A taped video message from Obama himself also was projected on a scoreboard

SPIKE LEE PREMIERES WORLD’S FIRST SOCIAL FILM October 15, 2008

Spike Lee was to attend last night’s Los Angeles premiere of Nokia Productions, the first user generated multimedia film, at the Nokia Plaza – LA Live with a simultaneous online premiere at http://www.nokiaproductions.com

T-Mobile USA, Inc. partnered with Nokia to develop the Nokia Productions film, which was built entirely by everyday people, using mobile devices to generate and submit original content which was then combined into one artistic multimedia film created by Lee.

The filmmaker guided and directed the creative submissions through video messages and his blog entries. After each act closed, Nokia selected the “Top 25″ submissions, and visitors voted for their favorite submission creating the “Top 10.” Lee then picked the winning submission from each act to be integrated into the final film. These three winners were to be flown to Los Angeles to participate in the premiere of the final film.

“What drew me to this project was the unique opportunity to do something that hasn’t been done before utilizing technology, the internet, and having people collaborate on a film,” said Lee. “The new technology, you might say, is bringing a democracy to film. Anyone can be a journalist, a filmmaker, a still photographer. Just pull out your mobile device, record it, press a button, and it’s instantly on the web. So I think it’s great that Nokia had the vision to see where all of this is headed.”

KING CHILDREN GO TO COURT OVER BOOK DEAL October 15, 2008

A Fulton County Superior Court judge decided late Tuesday to appoint a special master to settle a dispute among the children of Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King over who has rights to love letters written between the couple.

Their children are on opposing sides of a lawsuit over their mother’s personal papers that could derail a lucrative book deal.

The Rev. Bernice King is in possession of the papers and refuses to turn them over to Dexter King, who heads his father’s estate and has asked for the material for use in a biography about their mother.

New York-based Penguin Group is threatening to pull the $1.4 million book deal this week if the documents are not involved in the project.

Speaking to reporters outside of the Fulton County Courthouse on Tuesday afternoon, Dexter King said he was saddened by the family feud, but it was his two siblings who started the drama.

“This is really about a power struggle between siblings,” he said. “I’ve included them, but they’ve excluded me. They’re the ones who are trying to change or rewrite history. This is not something I asked for. This is not something I started.”

Bernice King and Martin Luther King III did not speak to reporters on Tuesday, but did issue a written statement on Monday through their attorney, Jock Smith.

“We are saddened that we are forced to make public statements about family matters that should be handled privately,” the statement read. “However, as our father taught us, we must respond to unjust criticism … Our stand against the publication of the memoirs of our mother … is not merely a family feud but rather our ongoing attempt to protect and maintain the integrity of our mother’s legacy. Although she is no longer here to speak for herself, it is important that the integrity and validity of her voice be reflected.”

J.LO’S RENEWAL OF VOWS NOT SO SUDDEN? October 15, 2008

The Chicago Sun-Times is reporting that the sudden renewal of vows between Jennifer Lopez and her husband Marc Anthony was not as spur-of-the-moment as they have led folks believe.

“Apparently Lopez heard a couple of celebrity magazines were chasing a ’splitsville’ story, and the renewal of vows seemed like a good antidote to those tales,” reports Sun-Times columnist Bill Zwecker.

He added: “By the way, several very good sources close to the couple laugh off those breakup rumors — agreeing with a longtime J. Lo associate who said Monday, ‘This is one couple whose marriage is just fine — trust me. They are very happy together.’”

Zwecker points out that Anthony’s claims of the nuptials taking place on the fly following a light night gambling spree contradicts reports that his friend and witness, Carlos Beltran of the New York Mets, had specially-engraved rings at the ready Sunday – both for him and his wife Jessica (who also renewed their vows) and Anthony and J.Lo.

The Palladium show will also serve as the launch of a Jay-Z tour in support of his final Def Jam album “The Blueprint 3,” due Dec. 2.

It’s unclear whether DJ AM, born Adam Goldstein, will join him on upcoming concert dates.

MICHELLE OBAMA INVITED TO GRAVE OF SLAVE ANCESTOR October 15, 2008

Michelle Obama, the wife of Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama, has been offered a chance to visit the gravesite of a slave ancestor on a plantation in South Carolina.

Whitney Tower tells the New York Daily News that his great-great-grandfather was ferry and railroad baron Cornelius Vanderbilt, and one of Michelle Robinson Obama’s great-great-grandfathers was Jim Robinson, who was born a slave in 1850 at the Friendfield plantation in Georgetown, S.C.

“After Lincoln freed the slaves, Jim Robinson stayed on and worked there,” Tower told the Rush & Malloy column. “We believe he was buried there in 1888, in the African-American cemetery. Ms. Obama is welcome to visit anytime.”

Michelle Obama visited Georgetown as a child and reconnected with relatives still living there while on a campaign stop in January, reported Shailagh Murray in an extensive Washington Post article on her genealogy. Her otherwise communicative family “didn’t talk about that,” and she had no idea of her connection to Friendfield, though she passed it “countless times” as a child, Murray said.

While her husband Barack does not have slave roots, Michelle would be the first First Lady who does.

PRINCE PERFORMS ON HOTEL ROOFTOP October 15, 2008

Prince performed before such celebs as Spike Lee, Dave Chappelle and Dennis Rodman over the weekend at New York’s Gansevoort Hotel rooftop in an event benefiting his Love 4 One Another and Urban Farming charities .

Presented by Inocente Tequila, the show took place before about 100 guests to celebrate the release of “21 Nights,” his Randee St. Nicholas book of photos.  The concert was nearly cut short after interference from guests’ cell phones in the room knocked out Prince’s high-tech sound system, according to the New York Post.

Before the show began, an emcee took the stage and begged guests to turn off their phones or “there may not be a show.” Some did, the Post’s Page Six reported, but many ignored the plea – including one publicist involved with the concert – claiming they had to have them on at all times.

“It was so obnoxious,” one fan told the column. “To think a bunch of idiots can’t exist without their precious cells for an hour.”

Also among the celebrity crowd was radio jock Howard Stern and CNN anchor Anderson Cooper.

Sitting in for Regis Philbin on Tuesday’s “Live with Regis and Kelly,” Cooper told the story of how he and Chappelle helped themselves to Prince’s guitar picks that were sitting unattended backstage. Anderson showed off his souvenir to the studio audience.

A source told Page Six that earlier in the evening, Prince had Gansevoort staffers working hard to meet his pre-show demands. “He’s very anal and required a humidifier in every room of his suite and the windows blacked out,” said the spy.

BARBARA RESPONDS TO STAR’S ‘HATEFUL’ CHARGE October 15, 2008

Barbara Walters says she doesn’t understand why her former co-host on “The View,” Star Jones, would tell Essence magazine that she and the other co-hosts were “hateful” toward her as she was leaving the show.

As previously reported, Jones is featured in the November issue of the monthly saying of her former co-workers “Those girls were hateful” during her final days in 2006.

Walters, whose “View” run with Jones was shared with co-hosts Joy Behar, Meredith Viera and Elisabeth Hasselbeck, told the Associated Press: “Star had wonderful years with us on ‘The View.’ And, I think ‘The View’ made Star a star.” Walters added that she wishes “her well.”

Jones left “The View” in June 2006 after her contract was not renewed. She’d been one of the show’s co-hosts for 9 years. The former prosecutor is currently in talks to make a non-scripted TV comeback, and was photographed kissing executive chef Herb Wilson in the stands at last month’s U.S. Open.

CHEADLE REPLACES HOWARD IN ‘IRON MAN 2′ October 15, 2008

As previously reported, Don Cheadle will take over the role of Jim Rhodes in “Iron Man 2″ after negotiations with original actor, Terrence Howard, stalled over financial differences and other reasons, claimed the Hollywood Reporter.

In the first film, Howard played the role of Iron Man’s best friend, who in the future goes on to become armor-clad hero War Machine.

Marvel is expected to expand the Rhodes role in the May 7, 2010 sequel, which will feature Robert Downey Jr. returning in the title role of billionaire industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man and Jon Favreau back in the director’s chair.  Gwyneth Paltrow also is expected to return as Stark’s assistant, Pepper Potts.

Meanwhile, Cheadle is shooting Antoine Fuqua’s “Brooklyn’s Finest” with Richard Gere and Ethan Hawke. He most recently starred in “Traitor,” a thriller on which he was also a producer. He will next be seen in DreamWorks’ “Hotel for Dogs.”
