It looks like people will soon be able to swag like T.I. after all. The self-proclaimed “king of the south” held a launch for his Akoo clothing line at Taj Lounge in New York City last night (11/13).

Irv Gotti, Maino and executives John Monopoly and Michael Kyser among many others, were on hand to support Tip. Akoo (A King Of Oneself) actually launches in stores November 15th.

Tip recently described his line as a mix between casual and dressy, stating: “[Akoo is] fly upscale fashion for the young and sexy, for the old and rich. Either way, if you cannot provide swag for yourself, you just holler at me and I will appoint something to you.”

Woman claims Perry never wrote it…but took the credit

A woman has filed a copyright infringement suit against filmmaker Tyler Perry, claiming she wrote the hit 2005 film “Diary of a Mad Black Woman”— not him.

Perry must appear in court this week. According to KSLA News 12, Perry’s  company Tyler Perry Studios, and Lionsgate Entertainment, were also named in the suit which was filed by Donna West May 2007. West is  seeking all profits made from “Diary” as well as damages.

West says she wrote a story called “Fantasy of a Black Woman” in 1990. She got a copyright for the film in 2006. Perry’s  lawyers said that West has no grounds to sue because she didn’t register her work until after the allegations. “Diary of a Mad Black Woman” debut February 2005.

Opening arguments begin December 3 at the U.S. Federal Courthouse in Marshall, Texas.

Don’t Forget About Love November 14, 2008

Over the past week, I’ve received at least ten different emails from readers essentially expressing the same frustration: “Love sucks.” And as they detailed their very personal and private situations, I could agree that when judging love strictly through their circumstances, it did appear to suck. Thankfully (which is what I hope to share with them) things will eventually get better.

What I’ve learned is this; dark days come to us all. But during those rough patches, we can’t lose sight of the positives of love. While unfortunate, our past and present pain is only temporary, and can eventually be replaced by what we all instinctively desire: love in its purest form.

In honor of that sentiment, I decided to start your day off with some love-inspired music, both old and new. I hope it reminds you all of the endless possibilities and promise of love. Enjoy your day.

Beyoncé: I Didn’t Want to Marry Too Young November 14, 2008

Beyoncé, who has always been tight-lipped about her marriage to Jay-Z, is finally giving some insight into her thoughts about tying the knot.

“I was 18 when we first met, 19 when we first started dating. There was no rush,” the singer tells Seventeen in its December/January issue, due out Nov. 18. “I really don’t believe that you will love the same thing when you’re 20 as you do at 30.”

The singer, whose new album I Am … Shasha Fierce arrives Monday, says she wanted to have a strong sense of self before making a lifelong commitment to anyone.

“Before the age of 25, I would never get married,” says the 27-year-old singer. “I feel like you have to get to know yourself, know what you want, spend some time by yourself, and be proud of who you are before you can share that with someone else.”

Still, she has learned a lot from her music mogul husband – and not just about showbiz. Asked what lessons Jay-Z has taught her, she says, “I guess probably that we’re all human.”

“I don’t care if you’re picture-perfect on every magazine cover, and you’re the most handsome, successful, coolest guy,” says Beyoncé. “You still get sad, and you still get your feelings hurt, and you still get confused and vulnerable and nervous and scared. You have to find a person you can make it through the tough times with.”

Beyoncé also shows her fiercely ambitious side in the interview, saying that she often studies her own past performances looking for ways to improve.

“I have my YouTube days, when I watch every performance,” she says. “I listen to my music, and I watch my videos to figure out what I need to do, what I need to fix, and how to become a better singer.”

Drummer Mitch Mitchell, the last surviving member of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, was found dead early Wednesday in his hotel room in Oregon, the AFP reported. He was 62.

No cause of death was immediately available, but a statement on the official Jimi Hendrix Web site run by the late guitarist’s estate said Mitchell died from natural causes.

“We’re all devastated to hear of Mitch’s passing,” Janie Hendrix, chief executive of Experience Hendrix said. “He was a wonderful man, a brilliant musician and a true friend. His role in shaping the sound of the Jimi Hendrix Experience cannot be underestimated.”

Mitchell, whose unique drumming style was regarded as a crucial component of the Hendrix-led group’s success, had just completed an 18-city tour of the United States with Experience Hendrix, a concert series featuring guest performers playing tributes to the 1960s group’s music.

“Over the course of the recent tour (Mitch) seemed delighted with the interchange with the other musicians and the audiences. There is no question that he was doing what he loved,” Janie Hendrix added.

KANYE VENTS ABOUT LOVE, MOM AND MTV November 14, 2008

Kanye West is doing interviews all over the place to promote the Nov. 24 release of his new album “808’s and Heartbreak,” but the conversations have strayed off topic to also include his love life and the death of his mother, Donda West.

Speaking to People.com exactly one year after his mom died of complications following plastic surgery, the 31-year-old said he is just now at a point where he can discuss the subject openly.

“I didn’t do any interviews after my mom passed, I wasn’t ready to speak about [it],” he said. “Now I’d rather talk it through than commit suicide. I’m super devastated.”

The rapper says he blames himself – or more specifically, his fame – for her death. “I feel like I moved to California, then my mom moved to California, and she did stuff she wouldn’t have done if we’d stayed in Chicago,” he said. “If I’d never made it in the music business, it never would’ve happened.”

Speaking to reporters Tuesday at a London listening party for the new album, West said the recording studio helped him deal with his sense of isolation. (In addition to losing his mother, he also split with his fiancée, Alexis Phifer.)

“It’s lonely at the top,” he said. “Losing my mom, having no woman in my life to support me – I feel like I’m on my own and can only express it through my music.”

And while admitting he was “depressed, down,” West said several celebrities have helped him get through the pain.

“I ran into Beyoncé Knowles , Paul McCartney, [at the MTV Europe Music Awards and] I felt comfortable,” he said. “Rejuvenated.”

As for starting a family one day, Kanye said, “I want to have kids. But I want to have the right girl too – someone who really cares about me. When I’m in a club, girls are super-calculating, planning every step.”

Regarding his place in pop culture, West told the Associated Press that he is to music what Michael Jordan was to basketball.

“I realize that my place and position in history is that I will go down as the voice of this generation, of this decade, I will be the loudest voice,” he said in an interview on Wednesday. “It’s me settling into that position of just really accepting that it’s one thing to say you want to do it and it’s another thing to really end up being like Michael Jordan.”

The Grammy-winning rapper-producer said Justin Timberlake had a chance to be music’s MVP, but hasn’t release enough material. (Timberlake’s last album was in 2006, while West released a CD last year in addition to the Nov. 24th release of “808’s & Heartbreak.”

“There were people who had the potential to do it but they went on vacation, so when Justin went on vacation I made albums,” he said. “And it just came out to be that.”

And finally, West vented frustration with the choice of winners at the recent MTV Europe Music Awards, calling the ceremony fixed.

“Britney Spears over Rihanna? Are you serious?” he told WENN before his show at London’s 02 Arena.  “I mean f***ing Jared Leto? He’s my boy but he shouldn’t have won over some of those other artists.” (Leto’s band 30 Seconds to Mars picked up the Rock Out and Video Star awards in Liverpool.)

“I won nothing last year and I’d brought out ‘Stronger’,” West continued. “Then this year, just because I was there, I won best urban act. This was Lil Wayne’s year.”

MTV say the award West won was voted for entirely by their viewers. Most of the other categories, however, including all the top awards, are chosen by MTV’s Academy of music movers and shakers.

Obamamania continues to rock the publishing industry, with sales of books related to the president-elect in huge demand.

According to Nielsen Bookscan, which tracks about 70 percent of the country’s sales, more than 100,000 copies of Barack Obama’s books sold Nov. 3-9, including 50,000 copies each of “The Audacity of Hope” and “Dreams from My Father” and 19,000 copies of “Change We Can Believe In,” a collection of speeches and policy papers.

Bids on eBay for a signed first edition of “The Audacity of Hope,” a million-seller published in 2006, have topped $1,000, reports the Associated Press.

Meanwhile, publishers are in hot pursuit of new books about Obama, the first African American to be voted president. According to the industry newsletterhttp://www.publishersmarketplace.com, which compiles deals, at least seven Obama-related projects have been agreed upon since the Nov. 4 election.

They include William Eggers’ and John O’Leary’s “If We Can Put a Man on the Moon,” a policy “roadmap” for the incoming administration, and “Renegade: The Education of Barack Obama,” by Newsweek’s Richard Wolffe.

Whoopi Goldberg has announced that she is mounting a stage production of her 1992 blockbuster film “Sister Act” to take place in London.

The Oscar winner and co-host of ABC’s “The View” says she will not star in the theater version, which mirrors the movie that starred Goldberg as an on-the-lam lounge singer who hides out in a convent.

The musical will open June 2, 2009, at the London Palladium, with preview performances beginning May 6, she announced Thursday on “The View.”

Goldberg will team with Stage Entertainment, one of Europe’s largest theatrical producers, in presenting the show.
