TYRA, OPRAH, TYLER AMONG TV’S ‘SMARTEST’ December 9, 2008

Whoopi Goldberg, Tyra Banks, Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry appear on Entertainment Weekly’s 25 Smartest People in TV, a list of small-screen titans who are driving today’s sharpest shows and deals.

Goldberg and her co-hosts on “The View” were listed at No. 25.5 for “juicing their ratings by pumping up their political banter.”  During election week, “The View” reached No. 1 in total daytime viewers for the first time in 12 seasons.

Banks, 35, ranked No. 23 on the list. EW noted, “She’s still in the running towards becoming America’s next top TV mogul. Her talk show (moving from syndication to The CW next fall) has the youngest median age in daytime, and ‘America’s Next Top Model,’ which just completed its 11th cycle, remains The CW’s highest-rated series. (Spin-off ‘Operation Fabulous’ launches next year.) Now the Emmy winner is developing other reality projects that fit the Banks ‘brand,’ like ABC’s upcoming ‘True Beauty,’ and she recently branched into film with the direct-to-DVD tween drama ‘The Clique.’”

Winfrey came in 6th on the tally because “her talk show still rules daytime, her first foray into reality (‘Oprah’s Big Give’) averaged 11.6 million viewers, and she’ll launch her own network — appropriately named OWN — in 2009,” said EW. “Her production company, Harpo, responsible for daytime hits ‘Dr. Phil’ and ‘Rachael Ray,’ will debut a new series next fall with Oprah staple Dr. Mehmet Oz. All this and she was funny on 30 Rock (‘Sweater capes!’).”

Atlanta-based mogul Perry ranked 4th for proving that “one need not exist within the borders of Hollywood to become an industry heavyweight. Through his Tyler Perry Studios, he created and produced ‘Tyler Perry’s House of Payne’ — and persuaded TBS to buy 90 additional episodes in 2006 after a 10-show run earned major ratings. Then in August, he struck a deal with the cable net to produce a new sitcom, ‘Meet the Browns,’ based on his hit play and movie. The biggest sign of his growing success? This fall, Perry ditched his 70,000-square-foot studio for a twice-the-size production complex in Atlanta, which includes five soundstages and a backlot.”

Seth MacFarlane, the executive producer of “Family Guy,” “American Dad” and the forthcoming “The Cleveland Show,” topped the list. EW noted: “The apple-faced prankster secured a full-season order for a ‘Guy’ spin-off called ‘The Cleveland Show,’ and he still manages to find time to shoot his Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy Web shorts (and animated ads) for a separate deal with Google. With Guy reruns airing approximately 20 hours a week on various networks, it’s no wonder MacFarlane is now the highest-paid writer in TV.

10 Sex Tools Every Woman Needs December 9, 2008

Psst! Want to supercharge your sex life? We have the scoop on the bedroom essentials that will rock your world. (Bonus: You have most of them already!)

Karl Juenger1. A Pillow
A well-placed pillow can help you get into new positions and add sexy variety to old favorites. Try tucking a pillow under your butt in missionary position, says Mabel Iam, author ofSex and the Perfect Lover. Or put it between your legs while spooning. Of course, it also works the traditional way: under your head.

2. A Vibrator
The question isn’t why get a vibrator; it’s why not? You can use one on your own to explore what feels good, or with your partner to add a new dimension to sex together. Women who use vibrators report higher levels of sexual satisfaction with their partners, increased libido, and easier orgasms, according to research by REDBOOK Love Network expert Laura Berman, Ph.D. If you’re a newbie, try a discreet vibrator like the LAYAspot. “It fits in the palm of your hand, and it also easily fits between you and your partner for stimulation during intercourse,” says sex expert Emma Taylor (a.k.a. Em). Lo (Lorelei Sharkey), Em’s writing partner, suggests the Fukuoku 9000, which fits onto his (or your) finger. Or go to goodvibes.com for a guide on picking the right vibrator for you (click on “Sex Toys 101″ under “Pleasure Principles”).

3. A Lube You Love
Not only does lube make everything glide more smoothly, it can also help make sex last longer (because you won’t dry out) and make it easier to try different positions. To find one, sample as many as you can, says sexologist Pepper Schwartz, Ph.D., author of Prime: “It’s a very personal thing, and the fun is in finding one that you love and your body loves.” Water-based lubes (like Pink Water) are best if you’re worried about allergies, while silicone-based varieties (such as Pjur Eros Original Bodyglide) last longer. Mix things up with formulas that tingle or warm (like K-Y Touch Massage 2-in-1 Warming). You can even find organic and natural lubricants (such as Good Clean Love or Oceanus Carrageenan). To read user reviews of all these lubes — and more! — and buy them online, go to babeland.com or drugstore.com.

4. Just-for-fun Toys
Whether they’re tame (feather ticklers, whipped cream) or not so tame (fuzzy cuffs, whips), playful props add excitement to the mix. To see what tickles your fancy, take a field trip to an adult shop, or browse an online retailer like babeland.com or goodvibes.com.

5. A Great Sex Book
“When it comes to sex, you just can’t know too much,” says Iam. That’s why it helps to have a sex manual that covers the full gamut, from anatomy to vibrators. “Read it over a glass of wine and use it as a conversation starter,” suggests Em. Check out Em & Lo’s book Sex: How to Do Everything; the frank and informative The Good Vibrations Guide to Sex, by Cathy Winks and Anne Semans; or the Guide to Getting It On! by Paul Joannides, a comprehensive handbook that even has how-to diagrams.

6. Kegels
Kegel exercises tone and strengthen your pubococcygeal (PC) muscles, also known as your pelvic floor muscles. “The stronger those muscles are, the stronger the intensity of orgasm, not just with a partner but by yourself,” says Schwartz. Exercising these muscles also promotes blood flow and lubrication, which leads to heightened desire and arousal, says Berman. And you can squeeze your PCs during sex to add to his pleasure and yours — the squeezing action stimulates the hidden inner part of your clitoris. To do basic Kegels, squeeze as if you’re stopping the flow of urine, then release. (For more details, see redbookmag.com/kegels.)

7. A CD That Turns You On
Everyone knows that great music can set the tone for a romantic evening. The key is to find music that gets you in the mood, whether it’s a classical favorite, an upbeat dance mix, even that jam band that was so popular back in college. To avoid having to stop and play DJ mid-makeout, fill a multidisc stereo with sensual CDs and put it on shuffle, or load up your iPod with a playful playlist.

8. Sexy Lingerie
“Just like putting on your running shoes gets you in the mood for jogging, wearing lingerie helps you look, feel, andthink sexy,” says sex educator Dorian Solot, coauthor of I Love Female Orgasm. And it doesn’t have to be from Frederick’s of Hollywood to be arousing. Wear whatever makes you feel sexy and self-assured, whether it’s a cami and boy shorts, a satin gown and sexy heels, or a push-up bra and a thong. You can also use clothing to experiment with different roles: Do you want to be sweet? A vixen? An elegant goddess? “Find an outfit that speaks to a different part of yourself, and let it lead the way in the bedroom,” suggests Solot.

9. Erotica
Erotica can get you in the mood, keep you in the mood, and spark a lifetime of creative ideas to try out with your partner,” says Solot. And by “erotica” we mean any material that jump-starts your arousal and helps you plug into your fantasies — a sexy movie, an erotic story, an X-rated flick, even a good old-fashioned romance novel.

10. Honesty
You can’t slip it under your pillow or into your bedside drawer, but honesty might just be the most important tool of all. “Anytime you withhold anything, it creates barriers in the bedroom,” says Berman, who encourages couples to keep an open dialogue in and out of bed. Feeling shy? Get started by filling in the blanks of these useful phrases: “I’ve always wanted to ________.” “Have you ever thought about ___________?” “I’m not comfortable doing _____, but how about we try ____?” “I love it when you _____, but sometimes it’s a little too _______. I’d really love it if you ______ instead.” And, of course, the phrase no one can hear enough of: “You’re so good at __________, I’d love to have more!”

Usweekly.com is reporting that Jermaine Dupri has denied reports from several blogs that his girlfriend, Janet Jackson, is pregnant.

The baby rumors started flying when Jackson canceled tour dates in October due to “vertigo.”  But the magazine claims Jackson is not with child – at least for now.

“Everyone tells me that there will never be a good time, that I will always be busy, but I just think when the stars are aligned it will happen,” she said. “I’d love to have children… It’s just up to Jermaine, what he wants to do.”

As O.J. Simpson begins his 33-year jail sentence for robbing two sports memorabilia stars at gunpoint, he leaves behind an appearance in a rap video that was filmed as part of a prank-themed DVD titled “Juiced.”

The song, “Get Juiced,” features Simpson pranking unsuspecting victims a la Ashton Kutcher in his former MTV series “Punk’d.”  Adopting a gangsta rap persona named MC Juice, Simpson performs the track at a strip club surrounded by numerous burlesque, nude dancers, according to Allhiphop.com.

“All you player haters and you sucker MC’s better get on your knees/and get some of the these/These nuts…,” Simpson raps over a beat similar to Steady B’s “I’m Serious.”

Outtakes from the video also show Simpson holding a tongue-in-cheek audition for the strippers, dressed as Elvis with a dwarf, working in a fast food drive-thru, dressed as an 80-year-old man playing bingo and as a cheater who gets caught with a married woman, according to Allhiphop.com.

Additionally, Simpson is shown attempting to sell his infamous white Ford Bronco to unsuspecting marks, while acknowledging there are “no bodies in it” and that the SUV has “escapability.”

An uncensored version of O.J. Simpson’s “Get Juiced” will be featured on the Juiced comedy DVD, which is available in stores and online (http://www.getjuiced.com/) for $19.99. The video is also available on iTunes for $.99.

In other O.J. news, the family of murder victim Ronald Goldman, who won a wrongful death lawsuit against Simpson, will continue its pursuit of the $42 million award owed by the disgraced star, even as he serves jail time.

A lawyer for Goldman’s father, Fred Goldman, tells the New York Post the $33.5 million award his family won has increased to $42 million with interest. And Goldman is reportedly determined to pursue Simpson’s assets during his sentence to collect the sum.

Goldman’s collection lawyer, David Cook, says, “Even though Mr. Simpson has changed his address from Florida to Nevada, we’re still going on.”

The 31st annual Kennedy Center Honors in Washington opened Sunday with Denzel Washington and Clint Eastwood toasting the night’s first honoree, Morgan Freeman.

According to Variety, Washington discussed the actor’s difficult road to stardom, which included years of bit parts and even a gig dancing behind Chita Rivera at the 1964 New York World’s Fair. He said the movie star’s memorable role in “Driving Miss Daisy” persuaded Hollywood that Freeman “could give truth to any character he played.”

The Oscar-winner’s love of blues was represented by musical tributes from B.B. King and Koko Taylor.

Other artists presented with the Kennedy Center’s prestigious life achievement award were Barbra Streisand, country singer George Jones, choreographer Twyla Tharp and British rockers Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey of The Who.

BOBBY BROWN BOOK OUT TODAY December 9, 2008

Filed under: Entertainment — Ryann Hayman @ 11:26 am

Attention all you bad boy Bobby Brown stans. Remember the autobiography that was supposed to have come out earlier this year?

The one that Bobby had pledged to tell all. The one that Whitney didn’t want published for fear that all her business would be made public (what little that hasn’t already been put out there).

Yes, that one: “Bobby Brown: The Truth, The Whole Truth and Nothing But …”

The book was supposed to be a collabo between then-friends, author Derrick Handspike and Brown, but we’re told the bad boy had a change of heart about going forward with the tome. Looks like it didn’t matter because the “The Truth” is being released today via Down South Books and it’s now being called … surprise … an “unauthorized autobiography.”

We know what you’re thinking. Nope, Handspike and Brown won’t be exchanging Christmas cards this year. But Handspike feels he’s justified in carrying on and bringing the book to light in spite of Brown’s wishes for him not to.

Handspike’s reasons for doing so are detailed in the drama filled forward to the book which follows …

Forward To “Bobby Brown: The Truth, The Whole Truth and Nothing But …”  – by Derrick Handspike:

The birth of this book started off as an autobiography about Bobby’s life that was to co-written by me and Bobby.

The book was set to be published under my company Down South Books and Bobby and I were going to reap the benefits.

Somewhere between the completion of the book and the media blitz that occurred from the controversial quotes from the manuscript that were leaked to the New York Post, it seemed as though Bobby got cold feet and started to procrastinate on our final agreement and the promotional and marketing planning phase of the project.

Among other things, there were a few quotes leaked about his marriage to Whitney Houston and how he started the downward spiral of drug abuse that turned him into the Bobby we hear about in the tabloids. Undeniably, the quotes were blown out of proportion and made headlines all over the world. This book had just about as much coverage as the infamous O.J. Simpson trial that swept the nation years prior.

It got more coverage than all the newsworthy moments of that time such as the Jay Z and Beyonce wedding, Michael Jackson’s 25th year Thriller Anniversary, and more coverage than the Presidential Election.

How does a book on someone’s life get more press than the aforementioned news? Of course, it has to be drama or something very negative. Whatever the reason, I think this left a bad taste in Bobby’s mouth about going forward with the project, or in laymen’s terms he got “cold feet.”

Let’s rewind. Here is how it all went down.

Bobby called me the morning the story broke in the media and he was baffled! He was confused! His voice was all low and he sounded wounded. I had never heard him like that before. First of all, he wanted to know how the story got leaked into the press. Second, he was dealing with how Whitney and their Bobbi Kris were feeling about yet another negative outburst of publicity drama about their family, and this time it was rightfully caused by him. I don’t think he was really ready for what had just happened! Especially since him and Whitney had just started to heal and become friends after their divorce. We had discussed before how he was fully supportive of Whitney’s attempt to make a comeback in the music industry. (In my opinion) I don’t think he wanted the pessimistic reports from the book and tabloid gossip to overshadow the fact that Whitney was finally clean, sober, healthy and happy!

I spent days at a time over a year with Bobby and conducted several long hours of recorded interviews with him. I then took other resources in addition to spending quality time with his family members to come up with the manuscript for this book.

I had been known in the past to do handshake deals with former business partners, especially if they were friends or close associates of mine. This project was no different. Bobby and his family were close friends so we started working on the manuscript with only a handshake deal in place. We decided we would wait until we were about to release the project to bring the attorney’s in to complete a final agreement. After about a year, we finished the manuscript. He read and approved the final draft so we initiated talks with our attorneys about finalizing an agreement (as planned). Out of nowhere, quotes were leaked and the stories broke in various countries simultaneously. This is when the media frenzy began and things rapidly went left!

Inconspicuously, Bobby started stalling! The first sign of the fact that was unfolding daily was when he let our first release date of May 13th that we set come and go! He showed no signs of finalizing an agreement. When he let our second release date of June 1st roll around and we still hadn’t reached an agreement, it became transparent. Obviously, he was procrastinating! It seemed like him, his manager and his attorneys were trying to find anything that they could to not get the deal done, than to get the deal done! At this point, it started to feel like a conspiracy!

I had heard rumors that Whitney was trying to stop this book from coming out and that she was going to do whatever she had to do to keep it from being published. I started to wonder if Bobby’s attorney and/or manager had been paid off by Whitney’s people. After all, they were the ones making it difficult for us to reach an agreement. I then started to wonder if Bobby had been influenced by Whitney not to go through with it. Whitney has been known, is known and will always be known as having a major influence on him. For whatever reasons, Bobby, his lawyer and manager were not in a hurry to finalize the agreed upon book release deadlines!

What started out as a clean-cut, tell-all book of Bobby Brown’s life ended up being a negative media circus. For two weeks, the media picked the manuscript apart concentrating on anything they felt could make them be the first to disclose the dirt on Bobby Brown. Inevitably, this could discourage anyone, and in this case maybe Bobby.

Whatever the case, Bobby left me and my distributor standing still. He left us no choice! We didn’t know which way to go next because he just started procrastinating. With all of the hard work, time and dedication to the project and money spent out of my pocket preparing this memoir, I decided to make the necessary changes to release it. I made the changes to revise the book so that it reads as a biography in lieu of an autobiography.

All in all, there are no hard feelings from me. At the end of the day, business is business! Maybe Bobby does not want his personal life and the lives of those who matter the most, his family, to be scrutinized and splattered across the televisions, newspapers and websites of America anymore. Maybe he just wants to be left alone. Who knows I might’ve done the same thing myself. I can’t imagine what it would be like to live under a microscope and every word I say being used against me. I might crack under the pressure too, especially when the attacks are against loved ones. Actor Robert Downey Jr., who has had a public controversial life of drugs like Bobby, has recently done something similar with his book deal. He took a major advance from Harper Collins Publishing, held the money for over two years, then for some reason decided to return the money and back out of the deal.

The call I made on moving on with the release of the book unauthorized was nothing personal, it was strictly business. I will make sure Bobby is still fairly compensated, but I have to move on. Besides money, time, and energy, from a business standpoint, I feel like you can’t dangle a project in the public’s face by putting it on the market, have over a hundred thousand pre-orders, have all the major wholesale and retail stores waiting on the edge of their seats for a solid release date. Then for personal or whatever reasons decide not to go through with it. That is bad business! That could jeopardize the integrity of my company and damage my business relationships before I even get off the ground. There is too much at stake to just drop the ball. I have really good future projects waiting to be released and this is only one of them. I am the biographer/publisher of the stars and it’s my duty to deliver the public good and accurate projects in a timely fashion. I will keep up with my end of the bargain and do just that. So from me, I give to you “Bobby Brown: The Truth, The Whole Truth, and Nothing But …,” Enjoy!

“Bobby Brown: The Truth, The Whole Truth and Nothing But …” is available at Barnes And NobleAmazon.com and Down South Books.

TRINA RE-LAUNCHES CHARITY FOR TOY DRIVE December 9, 2008

Miami rapper Trina is re-launching her charity organization, Diamond Doll Foundation, with the 1st Annual “Jingle Bell Toy Drive,” to take place Dec. 14 as a benefit for the children of Jackson Hospital in her Miami hometown.

The artist will collect toys, pose for pictures and sign autographs at The Chop Shop, a popular barbershop within the Miami community. The day will include free haircuts and surprise appearances from special guests.

All attendees must bring a new, unwrapped toy to participate in the festivities. The following week, Trina will present the collected toys to the children of Jackson Hospital to help boost their spirits.

“It’s important for entertainers to utilize our influence to get involved and build awareness for community programs such as the Jingle Bell Toy Drive,” said Trina. “I am putting a renewed focus and energy into the Diamond Doll Foundation this coming year, as we look to help the less fortunate and provide motivation for young people to improve their lives.”

Trina created Diamond Dolls as a way to speak to young women about issues facing their community, such as teen pregnancy, runaways and self-esteem.
