TYRA, OPRAH, TYLER AMONG TV’S ‘SMARTEST’ December 9, 2008

Whoopi Goldberg, Tyra Banks, Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry appear on Entertainment Weekly’s 25 Smartest People in TV, a list of small-screen titans who are driving today’s sharpest shows and deals.

Goldberg and her co-hosts on “The View” were listed at No. 25.5 for “juicing their ratings by pumping up their political banter.”  During election week, “The View” reached No. 1 in total daytime viewers for the first time in 12 seasons.

Banks, 35, ranked No. 23 on the list. EW noted, “She’s still in the running towards becoming America’s next top TV mogul. Her talk show (moving from syndication to The CW next fall) has the youngest median age in daytime, and ‘America’s Next Top Model,’ which just completed its 11th cycle, remains The CW’s highest-rated series. (Spin-off ‘Operation Fabulous’ launches next year.) Now the Emmy winner is developing other reality projects that fit the Banks ‘brand,’ like ABC’s upcoming ‘True Beauty,’ and she recently branched into film with the direct-to-DVD tween drama ‘The Clique.’”

Winfrey came in 6th on the tally because “her talk show still rules daytime, her first foray into reality (‘Oprah’s Big Give’) averaged 11.6 million viewers, and she’ll launch her own network — appropriately named OWN — in 2009,” said EW. “Her production company, Harpo, responsible for daytime hits ‘Dr. Phil’ and ‘Rachael Ray,’ will debut a new series next fall with Oprah staple Dr. Mehmet Oz. All this and she was funny on 30 Rock (‘Sweater capes!’).”

Atlanta-based mogul Perry ranked 4th for proving that “one need not exist within the borders of Hollywood to become an industry heavyweight. Through his Tyler Perry Studios, he created and produced ‘Tyler Perry’s House of Payne’ — and persuaded TBS to buy 90 additional episodes in 2006 after a 10-show run earned major ratings. Then in August, he struck a deal with the cable net to produce a new sitcom, ‘Meet the Browns,’ based on his hit play and movie. The biggest sign of his growing success? This fall, Perry ditched his 70,000-square-foot studio for a twice-the-size production complex in Atlanta, which includes five soundstages and a backlot.”

Seth MacFarlane, the executive producer of “Family Guy,” “American Dad” and the forthcoming “The Cleveland Show,” topped the list. EW noted: “The apple-faced prankster secured a full-season order for a ‘Guy’ spin-off called ‘The Cleveland Show,’ and he still manages to find time to shoot his Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy Web shorts (and animated ads) for a separate deal with Google. With Guy reruns airing approximately 20 hours a week on various networks, it’s no wonder MacFarlane is now the highest-paid writer in TV.

In the new issue of Ebony magazine, Tyra Banks says she’s flattered when referred to as a media mogul in the press, but hesitates to embrace it completely – insisting she is not yet worthy of the title.

“Don’t get me wrong, ego-wise, when I see the cover of the magazines and they say that (I’m a mogul), I’m like, ‘Oh, that looks popping and it looks hot,’ but it ain’t true,” she tells the magazine.

“Oprah’s been doing this for 30 years. Mogul? That’s like Martha Stewart. That’s like going public. Mogul? Not yet,” she says.

The Emmy-winning celeb has scored TV hits with “The Tyra Banks Show” and her reality program “America’s Next Top Model,” which has spawned international versions across the globe.

Banks says her sights are actually set higher than the “mogul” status. She adds, “I think I’ll have an empire.”

Tyra Banks’ Daytime Emmy-winning talk show will be taken out of syndication and moved to the CW for its fifth season, which is scheduled to begin in September 2009, reports Variety.

The shift places “The Tyra Banks Show” with her other programs “America’s Next Top Model” and “Stylista” all within the CW family.

“I’m thrilled to have The Tyra Banks Show join the CW, where I already have an amazing partnership and where my audience knows to look for me,” Banks said in a statement Friday. “With ‘Top Model’ in prime-time and ‘The Tyra Banks Show’ in daytime, it’s a match made in heaven.”

The cover girl’s chatfest won a Daytime Emmy earlier this year for Outstanding Talk Show/Informative. Her upcoming reality show “True Beauty,” with co-executive producer Ashton Kutcher, is set to debut Monday, Jan. 5 on ABC.

Meanwhile, Wednesday’s victory of McKey Sullivan as “America’s Next Top Model” drew 4.8 million viewers, the show’s largest audience in a year. At 9, “Stylista” attracted 2.1 million, earning its best numbers since the season premiere.

Tyra Banks is giving one of her former contestants on “America’s Next Top Model” a gift that keeps on giving.

Isis King, the CW show’s first transgendered contestant, will have her long-desired sex reassignment surgery paid for by Banks, who announced the gift during King’s appearance on “The Tyra Banks Show” this week.

“This is not happening!” King said in disbelief. “I feel like I really was born in the wrong body, and it’s just the one thing that makes me feel uncomfortable.”

Although King had been taking hormone replacement therapy — as seen on an episode of “Top Model” — she couldn’t afford the full surgery, which runs from $20,000-$35,000. On the episode, Banks introduces King, 22, to Dr. Marci Bowers, a gender reassignment surgeon who will be performing the procedure.

King was born Darrell Walls and was living in a homeless shelter when Banks discovered her and featured her in a photo shoot for the 10th cycle of “Top Model.” King returned as a full-fledged contestant this season, but was eliminated because she couldn’t convey emotion through her eyes and was uncomfortable in a swimsuit.

BIANCA SPEAKS OUT ABOUT BLONSKY FIGHT October 3, 2008

Former “America’s Next Top Model” contestant Bianca Golden is finally speaking out about her much-reported brawl with “Hairspray” star Nikki Blonsky over the summer in Turks & Caicos.

Golden was interviewed by “Top Model” co-creator and host Tyra Banks for an episode of her daytime talk show that’s scheduled to air on Oct. 8.

According to People.com, Golden said she and her family were returning home from a reunion for her dying grandfather when they ended up in the same waiting area of the airport as the Blonskys.

The fight started with Blonsky being “very rude to my aunt,” Golden told Banks. An argument erupted between Blonsky’s and Golden’s families, then Blonsky’s father Carl “punched my mom.”

“He knocked her out,” says Golden. “He hit my mom with such force she stumbled back and when she stumbled back the whole family got up and attacked my mom.”

Then, when her mother was on the ground, Nikki “takes her foot and kicks my mom in her vagina, and that’s when my mom fell out completely,” says Golden. “When Nikki kicked my mom I went and grabbed her arm and she grabbed my earring. Her mom sat on her to get her off of me cause her mom saw what was happening and that was that.”

Golden says her mother was airlifted to the hospital with internal bleeding, a broken nose and a fractured skull.

“Her face is still black and blue,” she says.

Carl and Nikki Blonsky and Golden were all arrested on assault charges.

TYRA ANGERS TALK SHOW AUDIENCE: Witnesses run to Page Six after host keeps them waiting for more nearly two hours August 19, 2008

A recent taping of the “Tyra Banks Show” got started nearly two hours later than scheduled – which angered audience members because the delay appeared to be for no good reason.

An audience was brought into the West 26th St. studio for a taping of her episode “Celebrating Black Models, Past, Present and Future.” But, an audience member tells the New York Post’s Page Six that Tyra kept them waiting nearly 120 minutes as she stood backstage giggling, snacking and chatting with the crew.

“You could hear her going on and on because she was standing right behind the stage curtain,” said the audience member. “She’s talking and talking. Meanwhile, you have the entire audience waiting almost two hours for the taping to start.”

The spy also said Banks had the nerve to have a bad attitude when she finally started the show, which featured interviews with Beverly Johnson, Veronica Webb, Chanel Iman and Tameka Jacobs.

“She leaves us waiting, and everyone is sitting there complaining, and then she comes out and doesn’t say a word about it. She didn’t even say hello, she got right into her script,” said the source. “She acted so cold towards everyone. She’s a phony.”

Another audience member told Page Six that Tyra’s guests couldn’t get a word in edgewise. All along, “Tyra kept saying, ‘When I was a model,’ and would hardly let them talk,” said the audience member. “It was all about her, as usual.”

After the in-studio interview, the entire audience – which featured loads of aspiring models – was led outside onto the street for the show’s ending.

“Cops had it closed off, and Tyra had bodyguards,” laughed the spy. “She had the audience prance down the street and then release black balloons. Some were whining that it was so bad for the environment. It was so disorganized, people fell over the press outside and almost trampled two little girls. Tyra was acting like it was a live sporting event instead of the most self-indulgent, narcissistic crap.”
