The 39-year-old stood side-by-side with volunteers to hand out food to those in need, reports the Associated Press. Perry said he felt compelled to help out after hearing about the center’s efforts on the news.
“I had to do something,” he told the AP.
Perry, who was homeless for a time in his New Orleans hometown, donated enough food to feed 1,000 families for the next two weeks.
“I’ve been out on the street, I know what it’s about,” said Perry. “I couldn’t imagine doing that with children looking at me for food.”
