After years of searching for the right opportunity to work with Will Smith, director Steven Spielberg thinks he may have found the perfect project – an update of the 2003 Korean drama “Oldboy.”
Smith and Spielberg are in early discussions to remake the project, reports Variety. In Chan Wook-park’s Korean-language original, a man gets kidnapped and held in a shabby cell for 15 years without explanation. Suddenly, he’s released and given money, a cell phone and clothes and is set on a path to discover who destroyed his life so he can take revenge.
DreamWorks is in the process of securing the remake rights, and the new film will be distributed by Universal, reports Variety. Smith would play the kidnapped man if a deal between all parties can be hammered out.
Spielberg is currently looking for a writer to begin the development process.
