NBC TO MAKE ‘FRIENDS WITH BLACK PEOPLE’ November 19, 2008

A buddy comedy based on the 2006 book “Making Friends With Black People,” about the state of race relations in the U.S., is being developed as a sitcom for NBC, reports Variety.

Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil, executive producers of CW’s “The Game,” will write the script and executive produce the project.

The book’s author, Nick Adams, hopes the show can capitalize on how the election of Barack Obama as the country’s first African American president has changed the nation’s dialogue on race.

“From time to time, race bubbles up in the consciousness of the country and then dissipates,” said Adams. “Now, with Obama, people are talking about race a lot more. We hope to capitalize on that and not let the dialogue die down. … It seemed like a good opportunity to strike while the iron is hot.”

“Making Friends” will center on two guys — one African-American and one white — who become close friends, but who don’t necessarily see things the same way. Adams, a standup comic, wrote the book as a humorous look at how people dance around issues of race. He’ll serve as a co-producer on the project, while Industry’s Dianne Fraser and Eryn Brown will be co-exec producers.

THE GAME cancels festival appearance; sister reportedly shot in drive by days later; documentary DVD about his life to be released October 18, 2008

The Game, born Jayceon Taylor, canceled his scheduled headlining appearance at the SAIG Entertainment and International Arts Festival earlier this month without giving a reason, reports Allhiphop.com.

The event took place Oct. 11 and 12 and also featured performances by Tamia, Morgan Heritage and New Orleans native  Lloyd.

According to the Festival’s founder Ernest Kelly, event producers were told that The Game had failed to board a 3:30 pm flight on Sunday (Oct 12) for unknown reasons and that his management had cancelled all New Orleans hotel and transportation accommodations.

*AllHipHop.com is also reporting that The Game’s sister was shot during a drive by shooting in Compton on Oct. 14. Sources told the Web site that she was sitting on her front porch when she suffered minor injuries after being grazed by a bullet.

*The Game is set to release a DVD entitled, “The Game…Life After The Math,” a documentary from Polychrome Pictures about his turbulent rise to fame.

In telling his story, the film contains rare, never-before-seen footage of Katt Williams, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent and Kanye West, among others.

“Rarely do you find an artist who is so confident and secure with themselves and their abilities that they are willing to let fans into their head to see the demons they’ve battled,” said Danny Rodriguez, co-founder of Polychrome Pictures. “Game has exposed his soul in his music and in ‘Life After The Math’ he reveals the reasons he was driven to street life, not justifications for it. We could not be more honored to be a part of the project.”

Bow Wow owes The Game $100,000 after losing a bet over who is the best celebrity player of Madden NFL ’09.

The Game had been claiming he was the Madden king, so Bow Wow challenged him to put his money where his mouth is.

At Friday’s Konsole Kingz “Madden Showdown” in Los Angeles, The Game’s New England Patriots were up 28 to nothing over Bow Wow’s Cincinnati Bengals after only the first quarter. Bow Wow ended up losing 55 to 23.

“I’m the s**t, man. I don’t know what else to say,” The Game boasted afterwards.

Bow Wow jokingly blamed the videogame’s weather conditions for his failure, saying: “I don’t care what they say, it was in the snow, first of all. Second of all… nah, I’m just playing. We had a lot of fun doing it. …Money going to charity. We both winners at the end of the day.”

The Game was recently charged with criminal battery for allegedly punching his cousin at a family funeral.

According to TMZ.com, the Hawthorne City Attorney brought charges against the artist for allegedly striking his cousin over an argument about money. As previously reported, the cousin accused Game of going back on his promise to pay for the service.

The Compton-born rapper is currently on probation for assault after he allegedly pulled a gun during a celebrity basketball game. If he’s convicted of this new charge, a judge could rule he’s in violation of the probation and toss him in jail.

• A judge has ordered the rap star to consider mediation in a civil suit stemming from the assault case. The lawsuit was filed in March by pro-amateur coach Shannon Roderick, who accused Game of assault, battery, negligence and civil rights violations after the rapper allegedly retrieved a gun from his vehicle during an altercation at the basketball game. Roderick’s lawyer Portasha Moore said she will follow the judge’s order to seek mediation.
